Autumn is the perfect season to read. When the rain lashes down and the wind howls through the trees, it can be bliss to settle on the sofa with a good book. Here are a few of my favourite autumn books, chosen for comfort, familiarity and inspiration.
Emily of New Moon by Lucy Maud Montgomery
The lesser known sister (in book form at least) of Anne of Green Gables, the Emily of New Moon trilogy bursts with nature and has satisfying, comforting characters enjoying life’s adventures. If you love writing, it will inspire you to write too: a vintage escape.
Art Matters by Neil Gaiman and Chris’s Riddell
Feeling sluggish? This book kick-starts the imagination with inspirational words and beautiful illustrations. It’s a short read, ideal to dip into on a dozy afternoon.
The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams
A real tear-jerker, this is a beautiful story of love, loss and growing up.

The Swish of the Curtain by Pamela Brown
“Let’s do the show right here.” Another childhood classic, the innocence and enthusiasm are heart-warming. Escape into a world where anything is possible.

History and glamour combine in this frothy delight. Glamorous parties, amoral artists and the pursuit of dreams.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
One of my most-read books, slipping between the pages is like pulling on a much-loved jumper. Other-worldly adventures, engaging characters and the meaning of life. And when you finish reading, there’s the rest of the (sort of) trilogy to enjoy.
