Growing your own salad can cut shopping bills and reduce waste. Lettuce windowboxes and tomatoes in tubs are great if you have limited space, and a well stocked herb windowbox can make cooking on a budget more enjoyable.

It’s not too late to start. Scatter dried peas in a container for delicious pea shoots; sow salad; plant strawberries or buy chilli plants for a window. Growing your own food is fun and can save money if you have the space and a little time.
